House President underlines importance of further strengthening cooperation between Cyprus and Jordan

The President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, underlined the importance of further strengthening cooperation between Cyprus and Jordan to address common challenges during her meeting on Friday with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Ayman Al Safadi, during his official visit to Cyprus.

According to a statement issued by the House, Demetriou praised the very close relations between Cyprus and Jordan, which are governed by common principles and values, while she noted with satisfaction the cooperation between the two countries in the field of fire safety.

Furthermore, it is noted that the House President expressed her appreciation for the firm position of Jordanian government regarding the Cyprus problem, stressing that for 48 years Cyprus has been suffering gross violations of international law and human rights as a result of the Turkish invasion and continued occupation of part of the Republic of Cyprus’ territory, while she made special reference to the latest provocative actions in the enclosed area of Famagusta.

On his part, the Jordanian official reportedly underlined that relations between Jordan and Cyprus are very strong, as they are based on both the geographical and cultural proximity, and reaffirmedhis country’s principled position on the Cyprus problem and the need to reach a political solution, in line with the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions

At the same time, Safadi expressed his gratitude for the principled stance of the Republic of Cyprus on the Middle East issue, on the basis of the relevant UN Resolutions, while underlining the importance of expanding cooperation in areas of common interest, particularly on issues related to contemporary challenges, such as the food crisis.

It is also noted that during the meeting a common will was expressed to further strengthen inter-parliamentary relations between Cyprus and Jordan, both through increased bilateral exchanges and in the framework of the parliamentary dimension of the trilateral cooperation among Cyprus, Greece and Jordan.
