House President Emphasizes Gandhi’s Legacy in Cyprus Tribute

Nicosia:The universal legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and its particular significance for Cyprus were highlighted by Annita Demetriou, President of the House of Representatives, during her address at the annual ceremony honoring the bust of Mahatma Gandhi near the House of Representatives building.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the ceremony was organized by the High Commission of India to mark the 157th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's birth, officially commemorated every year on October 2. The United Nations General Assembly has designated this day as the International Day of Non-Violence in Gandhi's honor.

In her address, Demetriou recalled the struggles of the peoples of both India and Cyprus for independence, emphasizing the ongoing relevance of non-violence and dialogue, especially amidst current global armed conflicts and geopolitical tensions.

She also reaffirmed Cyprus' steadfast commitment to universal principles and values. Additionally, Demetriou expressed the House's appreciation to India's High Commissioner, Mr. Manish, for his role in strengthening bilateral contacts.

Demetriou noted that the historic relations between Cyprus and India are based on common starting points and solid foundations, as both nations embark on a new era in their relations, with significant contributions from their respective Parliaments.
