Nicosia: House President Annita Demetriou and Ukrainian Ambassador to Cyprus Ruslan Nimchynskyi stressed the importance of avoiding setting dangerous precedents in Ukraine during a farewell meeting marking the end of the Ambassador’s tenure in Cyprus.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Demetriou thanked Nimchynskyi for the excellent cooperation developed between the House and the Ukrainian Embassy and for his significant contribution to strengthening bilateral relations.
Demetriou reaffirmed Cyprus’ principled stance and solidarity with Ukraine and its people, based on international law, stressing that Cyprus consistently supports Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
She noted that, given its own painful experience, Cyprus fully understands what invasion and occupation mean. She stressed that countries facing such challenges can only safeguard themselves through an unyielding adherence to international law.
The House President highlighted Cyprus’ active participation in EU-level discussions and decisions on Ukraine and reiterated Cyprus’ support for Ukraine’s European path. Referring to current developments, she stressed the need for a clear and united voice among EU member states and for universal application of the Union’s principles and values. She noted that ‘avoiding the creation of dangerous precedents is vital.’
Ambassador Nimchynskyi expressed his gratitude for Cyprus’ steadfast support, based on shared principles and parallels between the two countries’ situations. He reaffirmed Ukraine’s position in favor of a just and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue in line with international law and UN resolutions, adding that Cyprus’ persistence and determination serve as an example for the Ukrainian people.
Referring to ongoing talks on Ukraine, Nimchynskyi warned that the peace process does not end with the cessation of war but lasts for years, cautioning about the security and stability risks which would derive from creating dangerous precedents in Europe.
