House President and UK High Commissioner Discuss Cyprus Issue and Bilateral Cooperation

Nicosia:House President Annita Demetriou met with the UK High Commissioner to Cyprus, Michael Tatham, to discuss the Cyprus issue, bilateral cooperation, and EU-UK relations.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the meeting emphasized the strong bilateral ties and cooperation in various fields, with a shared commitment to enhance parliamentary exchanges to address common challenges.

Demetriou highlighted the importance of the UK's consistent support for resuming substantive talks within the UN framework, aiming for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue, especially in light of the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin's visit. She also expressed concerns over Turkey's ongoing provocations and non-compliance with the Pyla agreement terms.

The British High Commissioner reaffirmed the UK's position on the Cyprus problem, aligned with UNSC resolutions. Tatham reiterated the UK's readiness to assist in resolving the issue, acknowledging its role as a guarantor power. He noted the UK's close monitoring of the Pyla situation and recognized the United Nations Peacekeeping Force's significant role.

Tatham also addressed EU-UK relations, mentioning pending agreements in areas like energy, agriculture, and youth mobility. He expressed the UK's intent to strengthen relations with the EU and appreciated Cyprus's constructive role during its EU Council Presidency.

Cyprus has been divided since Turkey's 1974 invasion, with numerous UN-led peace talks failing due to Turkish intransigence. The last negotiations in 2017 ended without resolution. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres plans to convene another meeting after proper preparation, with Holguín engaging with all parties involved.
