House President Acknowledges Chinese Ambassador’s Role in Strengthening Cyprus-China Relations

Nicosia: House President, Annita Demetriou, received Liu Yantao, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Cyprus, as he concluded his term in Cyprus. During their meeting, she commended his efforts in enhancing the bilateral relations between Cyprus and China.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the meeting underscored the excellent state of relations and cooperation between the two nations, which are rooted in shared principles, values, and a commitment to the Charter of the United Nations, international law, and multilateralism. Both parties highlighted the upgrade of their bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership as a significant milestone, which has since propelled cooperation in areas of mutual interest across various levels, including parliamentary and people-to-people exchanges.

Demetriou expressed gratitude for the productive collaboration between the Cypriot Parliament and the Chinese Embassy during Liu’s term. She acknowledged his substantial role in deepening the relations between Cyprus and China, and between their respective parliaments. Furthermore, she appreciated China’s steadfast position as a permanent member of the UN Security Council on the Cyprus issue, reaffirming Cyprus’ commitment to the “One Cyprus One China” principle.

As Cyprus prepares to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Demetriou emphasized the country’s dedication to fostering the EU-China dialogue. She highlighted the importance of Cyprus-China cooperation amid complex international challenges.

Ambassador Liu reiterated China’s ongoing support for resolving the Cyprus issue and expressed appreciation for Cyprus’ longstanding solidarity with the ‘One China’ principle. He noted that Cyprus’ upcoming EU Council Presidency could enhance its role in strengthening EU-China cooperation. Liu also praised the progress in China-Cyprus relations, particularly in economy and trade, and commended the leadership of the House President in promoting bilateral friendship.

Both leaders expressed a mutual desire to continue developing Cyprus-China cooperation, aiming to achieve common goals grounded in shared principles and values.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Efforts for a resolution, including UN-led peace talks, have yet to succeed, with the latest negotiations in July 2017 at Crans-Montana ending without resolution.
