House of Representatives Achievements Highlighted in Annual Report

Nicosia: House of Representatives President, Annita Demetriou, presented a comprehensive report on parliamentary activities covering the period between September 2024 and September 2025. She announced that the House conducted 36 plenary sessions, including 33 regular ones, and held 628 committee meetings over the year.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Demetriou outlined an ongoing initiative to amend the regulations governing the House of Representatives. The amendments aim to improve the election process for the House President and address issues related to the publication of parliamentary committee meetings and the management of confidential documents.

During this period, the House approved 255 bills, 75 legislative proposals, 48 regulations, and 63 service plans. Additionally, three bills and three legislative proposals were expedited through an urgent procedure. However, two bills, nine legislative proposals, and one regulation were rejected. The House also supported 44 bills aimed at integrating European legislation.

Demetriou expressed her satisfaction with the accomplishments, emphasizing the progress in parliamentary diplomacy. She highlighted the development of relationships with parliaments from 53 countries as a crucial asset for fostering bilateral relations. Through these connections, the House addressed important topics such as the Cyprus issue and the nation’s regional role.

Looking ahead, the House President discussed upcoming priorities, particularly in preparation for Cyprus’s EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2026. She mentioned that the House’s activities are being shared on the Interparliamentary EU Information Exchange platform.

In 2026, the House will host several significant meetings, starting with the Summit of the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs (COSAC) on 12 January. This will be followed by an Interparliamentary Meeting on Artificial Intelligence challenges on 15 January. Other notable events include the 18th Joint Parliamentary Meeting on Europol on 4 February, the European Parliamentary Week in Brussels on 23-24 February, the 28th Interparliamentary Summit for the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy on 4 March, and the 75th COSAC session on 6 March.
