Holgun Expresses Hope for Resumption of Cyprus Talks

Nicosia: UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holgun, announced her commitment to continue working towards the resumption of Cyprus talks, expressing hope for renewed negotiations.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Holgun, after her meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, discussed the ongoing process and preparation for an upcoming meeting with the UN Secretary-General. She emphasized the significance of the Committees in bringing people together for future cooperation, highlighting their current effectiveness.

Holguin also mentioned her plans to meet with the Youth Committee, which has strong support from both Cypriot leaders, and her intentions to have additional meetings with various stakeholders, including the chamber of commerce and negotiators from both sides. She plans to visit cemeteries to observe ongoing work, reinforcing her commitment to the peace process.

Cyprus has remained divided since 1974 following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite several UN-led peace talks, negotiations have yet to succeed, with the last round in 2017 ending without resolution. Recent informal meetings in New York and Geneva show a continued commitment to dialogue, with another meeting expected later this year.

Ongoing discussions between the two sides focus on issues such as opening crossing points and implementing a solar energy project in the buffer zone. There is also cooperation on cultural exchanges. Additionally, the European Commission’s appointment of Johannes Hahn as Special Envoy for Cyprus aims to support Holgun’s efforts in the settlement process.
