Nicosia: UN Secretary General’s personal envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, continues her contacts on the island, preparing a trilateral meeting the Secretary General will have with the community leaders in New York later this month.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Holguin, who expressed optimism on Monday about the resumption of talks, is scheduled to meet with the Greek Cypriot negotiator, Menelaos Menelaou, on Tuesday around noon. Later that afternoon, she will engage with the members of the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Youth.
On Wednesday, Holguin’s itinerary includes a visit to cemeteries restored by the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage. She is also set to meet with Gunes Onar, the Turkish Cypriot leader’s special representative and counterpart to Menelaou.
Furthermore, Holguin will meet with the members of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce, following a meeting she had on Monday with the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI). She has already conducted separate meetings with President Nikos Christodouldes and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.
Cyprus has remained divided since 1974, following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, no resolution has been reached, largely due to Turkish intransigence. The last significant negotiations took place in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana but ended without progress.
A second informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format occurred in New York on July 16-17, 2025. The UN Secretary-General announced plans for a joint meeting with Cyprus leaders during the General Assembly high-level week in September.
