Greek PM to discuss with UNSG his involvement in a fresh Cyprus effort

The Greek government has expressed its satisfaction with the fact that there is yet another initiative of the United Nations for the Cyprus issue, Greek Premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday. He also said that he will be meeting with the UNSG on Friday, on how he can be involved in another effort, which Athens considers imperative, so that the wound of the Cyprus issue can finally be closed. In statements to the press following his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Washington, the Greek Prime Minister said that the UNSG's Personal Envoy María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar has submitted her report to the UNSG, adding that he does not know the details of the content and therefore he couldn't comment. But he said that the Greek government still supports the resumption of the Cyprus talks, on the basis of the resolutions of the United Nations. Mitsotakis noted that he will be coming to Cyprus on July 20th, at the invitation of Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 50 years of the Turkish invasion. Replying to a question about the content of Holguín's report, the Greek Premier said that he does not know the details but what is imperative now is for the peace talks to begin between the two communities in Cyprus. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Columbia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
