Jakarta:Menelaos Menelaou, representing the Greek Cypriot side, and Mehmet Dana, the representative for the Turkish Cypriot leader, met on Friday. The meeting took place under the UN Good Offices Mission's auspices, directed by the Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Angela Holguín.
According to Cyprus News Agency, This discussion was held in preparation for an upcoming meeting between the leaders of the two communities, scheduled for Tuesday. Cyprus has remained divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of the northern part of the island. UN-led peace talks have repeatedly failed due to Turkish intransigence, with the last negotiations in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, in July 2017 ending without agreement.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has announced plans for another meeting in a broader format, contingent on adequate preparation, although no timeline has been set. He has secured consensus from both sides and the guarantor powers for this initiative. Raffaele Fitto serves as the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, taking over from EU special envoy Johannes Hahn.
