Athens:Cyprus is enhancing its presence in the European space sector, as emphasized by Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Dr. Nicodemos Damianou, at the 3rd Space Symposium organized by Hellas Sat on October 8, 2026.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Dr. Damianou highlighted the strategic significance of space for economic growth, security, and technological advancement. He noted projections from the World Economic Forum and McKinsey indicating the global space economy could reach $1.8 trillion by 2035.
Dr. Damianou pointed out Cyprus' advancements, including the National Space Strategy 2025-2030, new legislation for space activities, and the establishment of the Cyprus Space Office. A significant achievement was becoming an Associate Member of the European Space Agency in March 2026. For 2026-2028, Cyprus has allocated £13.5 million to ESA optional programs to bolster local expertise and Cypriot companies' participation in European value chains.
Cyprus is fostering space entrepreneurship by establishing its first specialized space business incubation center at the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence. The country's infrastructure includes four European-interest satellites, major ground stations through CYTA and Hellas Sat, a Galileo Search and Rescue station, and two EGNOS ground stations.
Dr. Damianou also discussed the development of optical ground stations to enhance Cyprus' role in the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure and the EU's IRIS² secure connectivity program. He emphasized strategic cooperation with Greece, especially in Earth observation, satellite applications, and quantum communications, including joint involvement in the SEEWQCI project.
He congratulated Hellas Sat on its 25th anniversary, acknowledging its contributions to satellite communications and the international presence of both Cyprus and Greece. Dr. Damianou expressed optimism about the potential for Greek-Cypriot cooperation to play a significant role in Europe's new space era through shared vision and coordinated efforts.
