Greece Pledges Support to Cyprus Amid Regional Tensions

Nicosia: Greece will stand by the Republic of Cyprus "whenever needed," Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis declared during a visit to Cyprus on board the Greek frigate Kimon, alongside President Nikos Christodoulides. Mitsotakis, accompanied by Cyprus Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas and Greek Foreign Affairs Minister George Gerapetritis, emphasized Greece's commitment to Cyprus' security amidst escalating regional tensions.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Mitsotakis assured that Greece had fulfilled its duty to protect Cyprus during a critical moment, expressing gratitude to the crews of the frigates for their readiness and swift response. He highlighted the operational readiness of the Greek Navy, noting that the ships were mobilized within five hours, a testament to the capabilities of the Greek Armed Forces.

The Greek Prime Minister further stressed Greece's ongoing support, stating, "we are here for whatever is needed," reflecting on the unexpected but timely deployment of the Kimon frigate. President Christodoulides expressed his gratitude for Mitsotakis' visit, noting its historical significance and the warmth of the Cypriot people's appreciation for Greece's protective stance.

The situation unfolded after a Shahed-type drone strike targeted military facilities at the British Bases in Akrotiri, Cyprus, causing minor damage. The attack, linked to Hezbollah in Lebanon, followed US-Israeli actions against Iran, heightening regional security concerns. In response, several countries, including Greece, France, Spain, and the UK, have deployed military assets to safeguard Cyprus, which maintains its non-involvement in the broader Middle East conflict.
