Athens: Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has asserted that Greece will not accept the change of borders by force, drawing parallels between the situation in Ukraine and the longstanding issue of Cyprus. Addressing recent developments, Mitsotakis emphasized Greece’s stance against forced territorial changes as he reiterated support for Ukraine.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Mitsotakis used his social media platform to address accusations against Greece for its support of Ukraine. He pointed out the hypocrisy of those who criticize Greece’s stance, noting that these critics would have Greece overlook the trauma of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. The Prime Minister questioned whether these critics would have Greece accept the outcomes of the illegal Turkish invasion and disregard Greek sovereign rights.
Mitsotakis reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to international legitimacy, stating that border changes by force cannot become a norm. He stressed the importance of an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and called for strong security guarantees to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and prevent future aggression.
Cyprus has remained divided since Turkey’s invasion in 1974, with efforts for peace talks, including those led by the United Nations, repeatedly failing to resolve the conflict. The most recent negotiations in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, in 2017, ended without an agreement.
