Greece and Cyprus are pillars of stability in the region, President says

Greece and Cyprus are pillars of stability in the region, President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said on Tuesday during his meeting at the Presidential Palace with Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis. The interests of the two countries should be promoted so that the Cyprus problem receives a just and viable solution, Gerapetritis said.

Welcoming the Greek Foreign Minister on his first official visit abroad after assuming office, President Christodoulides wished Gerapetritis every success in his new duties, expressing confidence that the cooperation between the two Governments will continue and will be further strengthened.

“There are common goals, common aspirations. Greece and Cyprus are pillars of stability in the region’, he added, noting that the two countries are distinguished by their extroversion in their foreign policy and are countries that provide solutions to problems instead of creating them through their behaviour.

“I consider the decision of the Prime Minister to entrust you with the duties of Foreign Minister a great honour, I am sure you will respond with great success considering your entire career,” the President of the Republic said, addressing Gerapetritis.

For his part, the new Foreign Minister of Greece said that “these are indeed historic moments we are living in. The situation is quite charged regionally and internationally, the challenges are great. We must, in the context of our common understanding of the way in which our interests should be promoted, ensure that the Cyprus problem receives the just and viable solution that we all want.”

“I think this is another historic opportunity to try within the UN and the EU, which seems to be taking a more active role thanks both to your personal efforts and the support of the Prime Minister of Greece. I think that the times will show that it is a great challenge, but also a great opportunity,” the Greek Foreign Minister concluded.
