Total government employment decreased by 3.3% in February 2023, compared to February 2022, according to data published by the Statistical Service of Cyprus on Monday.
Government employees amounted to 51,939 persons in February, down by 1,763. This decrease is attributed to the transfer of Hourly Paid Workers from the Ministry of Health to the State Health Services Organisation, which is included in the Broad Public Sector, as from January 2023.
Permanent staff decreased by 714 persons (-2.7%), from 26,130 to 25,416 persons. Casual staff increased by 666 persons (3.5%) and reached 19,945 persons compared to 19,279 persons in February 2022.
A 20.7% decrease is observed in Hourly Paid Workers and in all permanent personnel categories, whereas an increase is observed in all casual personnel categories. The main changes are observed in Civil Service staff, both in permanent staff (decrease 2.9%) and in casual (increase 5.7%).
Compared to January 2023, the main changes are observed in casual Educational Service staff (decrease 1.2%) and in casual Civil Service staff (increase 0.7%).
