Limassol: Spokesperson of the Electricity Authority Cyprus, Christina Papadopoulou, told CNA on Monday, that EAC will continue to work tirelessly towards restoring electricity power to all communities affected by the wildfires that hit large areas of the Limassol district last week.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Papadopoulou emphasized that EAC has undertaken a significant project to restore the damage in the affected areas. She stressed the priority of ensuring electricity for everyone and mentioned that the goal is to complete the network repair works safely and as quickly as possible.
Papadopoulou provided an update on the progress of restoring electricity supply, stating that on Sunday evening, EAC achieved a wider local repair of the network in the communities of Mallia, Souni, Zanakia, Pano Kyvides, and Sotira. Additionally, an EAC generator initially installed in Mallia was moved to Agios Amvrosios to meet the needs of that community.
Furthermore, Papadopoulou mentioned that a total of 150 people from all cities are working non-stop to restore electricity. She reported that 500 poles and 50 transformers were damaged, but by Sunday evening, 240 poles and 10 transformers had been replaced. Nine kilometers of medium-voltage overhead network were constructed to replace burned conductors, and 170 burned poles were removed.
In response to questions about actions to prevent forest fires, Papadopoulou noted that EAC actively participates in prevention efforts in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Department of Forests, the Fire Service, and the Fauna Service. The Authority conducts annual patrols on overhead electrical lines from February to June and uses drones to identify trees that require pruning to prevent electrocution or short circuits.
Papadopoulou assured that EAC will continue working continuously to restore energy supply to affected citizens and stated that planned works will be postponed to prioritize these affected communities.
