FMD Infected Farms Reach 101 in Cyprus, Veterinary Services Report

Nicosia: The number of infected farms has risen to 101, while a second case of foot-and-mouth disease has been detected at a pig farm, according to an update from the state Veterinary Services on Saturday. Tests continue in farms located within affected livestock zones, alongside contact tracing and laboratory testing, the Veterinary Services said.

According to Cyprus News Agency, one further positive sheep and goat farm has been confirmed in Dromolaxia-Meneou area, one positive cattle farm in Geri, and one pig farm in Paliometoho, bringing the total to 101 infected units. To-date, the disease was confirmed in 13 cattle farms (9 in Larnaca and 4 in Nicosia), 86 sheep and goat farms (62 in Larnaca and 24 in Nicosia), and 2 pig farms in western Nicosia (Paliometoho).

The Veterinary Services stated that assessment procedures and culling operations are ongoing in both Nicosia and Larnaca. The second phase of cattle vaccination has reached 73.5%, while sheep and goat vaccination has reached 58.5% of the respective animal population. As regards pigs, 94.73% of holdings located within the 3 km and 10 km infected zones have so far been vaccinated.
