Limassol: Firefighting operations in Limassol and Paphos are in full swing, with every effort being made to tackle the particularly difficult conditions, the Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, said in a post on X on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Cyprus News Agency, ground forces from the Fire Service, the Forestry Department, the Civil Defence, the District Administrations, and volunteers are participating in the operation in a coordinated manner. Thirteen primary aircraft and one coordination aircraft are operating from the air.
He added that all available resources have been activated, with requests for assistance sent to neighbouring countries. Jordan has already responded positively and plans to send two aircraft. At the request of the Republic of Cyprus, the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism has also been activated.
According to Letymbiotis, the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Marios Hartsiotis, and the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, are at the coordination centre in Limassol. Meanwhile, the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, is on his way for on-site information and coordination.
“Operations are continuing incessantly, with the protection of human life, the natural environment and citizens’ property being the top priority,” he concluded.
