Fire in Paphos District Destroys Two Square Kilometers of Vegetation

Paphos: The fire, that broke out in the area of Tsada and Koili communities in the Paphos district, burned two square kilometers, mainly wild vegetation, Forestry Department Director, Savvas Ezekiel, told CNA on Sunday evening.

According to Cyprus News Agency, authorities evacuated 10 residences as a precautionary measure and temporarily closed the road between Koili and Tsada, as well as the Polis to Paphos road, due to the low visibility caused by the smoke.

Fourteen fire engines from the Fire Service, seven fire engines from the Forestry Department, several bulldozers, and around 100 staff members from the Forestry Department, Civil Defence, and the Game and Fauna Service, among others, were deployed to extinguish the fire.

Meanwhile, on Monday morning, two firefighting aircraft from the Fire Department reinforced the efforts. As strong winds are expected in the afternoon, all forces remain in the area to address any possible resurgence, Press and Public Relations Officer, Koulla Mesaritou, told CNA. On Sunday evening, the fire was contained, but firefighting forces remain in place, she added.
