Nicosia: A new round of contacts with the FBI is imminent to determine the arrival of specialists in Cyprus, Police Spokesperson Vyron Vyronos told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) on Wednesday concerning the allegations on corruption, known as the 'Sandy' case. He also said that Europol continues its forensic analysis of evidence, although there is no clear timetable for completion.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Vyronos stated that a coordination process with the FBI is underway, with the aim of bringing a specialized team to Cyprus 'as soon as possible'. The Police Chief had contact with them on Tuesday, and a second communication was expected on Wednesday to set the date of their arrival.
Vyronos emphasized that 'substantive cooperation' will begin upon the arrival of the FBI experts, who are specialists in the analysis of police statements and will assist in that field. He highlighted that this specific FBI department has 'decades of expertise in the evaluation of statements and evidence in serious cases', and although the exact manner of their contribution is not yet clear, they have tools and methods that produce better results and will provide guidance.
Regarding Europol's involvement, Vyronos mentioned that 'the forensic examination of evidence that has been sent is still continuing', with daily communication and exchange of information. The overall progress of the investigations is 'at a very advanced stage', with many statements already taken, while the investigation team continues both the analysis and the gathering of further witness statements where necessary.
