Nicosia: Cyprus is affected by an extensive heatwave since Monday, expected to peak between 24-27 of July. Temperature is expected to rise between 42-44 degrees Celsius and the highest temperature in the mountainous areas will be around 32-35 degrees, the Meteorology department says.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the highest temperatures (between 42 – 44 degrees) will be recorded from Thursday, 24 July until Sunday 27 July in inland areas. During the same period in the higher mountainous areas, the highest temperatures will range between 32 – 35 degrees, peaking on Thursday 24 July. During this period, minimum temperatures are also expected to be significantly higher than normal.
The meteorology department attributes this phenomenon to the intense movement of warm air masses originating in North Africa to the central and eastern Mediterranean, combined with an anticyclone that prevents weather changes. The presence of high humidity, combined with extremely high temperatures, increases the risk of heat stress for the population.
