Nicosia: Cyprus recorded the highest annual increase in the total retail trade volume in June, reaching 8.7% compared to June 2024, according to first estimates from Eurostat.
According to Cyprus News Agency, in June 2025, compared with June 2024, the calendar adjusted retail sales index increased by 3.1% in both the euro area and the EU. In the euro area, the volume of retail trade showed a marked increase across various sectors, with food, drinks, and tobacco rising by 1.7%, non-food products (excluding automotive fuel) climbing by 4.3%, and automotive fuel in specialized stores increasing by 4.0%.
In the EU, the retail trade volume growth mirrored that of the euro area, with increases of 1.5% for food, drinks, and tobacco, 4.4% for non-food products (except automotive fuel), and 4.6% for automotive fuel in specialized stores.
Among the member states with available data, Cyprus led with an 8.7% annual increase in total retail trade volume, followed by Croatia at 7.4%, and both Malta and Portugal at 6.9%. Conversely, Finland and Slovakia saw decreases of 1.1% and 0.4%, respectively.
Compared with May 2025, the seasonally adjusted retail trade volume saw a modest rise of 0.3% in both the euro area and the EU. The previous month, May 2025, had witnessed declines of 0.3% and 0.5% in the euro area and the EU, respectively.
In June 2025, compared with May 2025, retail trade volume in the euro area increased for food, drinks, and tobacco by 0.2%, non-food products (excluding automotive fuel) by 0.6%, and automotive fuel in specialized stores by 0.4%. Similarly, in the EU, increases were noted in food, drinks, and tobacco (0.2%), non-food products (0.6%), and automotive fuel in specialized stores (0.6%).
Among member states, Croatia, Sweden, and Malta recorded the highest monthly increases in total retail trade volume at 3.6%, 2.6%, and 2.2%, respectively. The largest decreases were noted in France (0.9%), with Poland, Slovenia (both 0.8%), and Denmark (0.7%) also experiencing declines.
