Nicosia: Today, the European Commission announced the disbursement of £2.32 billion to Portugal under the NextGenerationEU initiative, marking the ninth payment within the framework of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). This facility is integral to the Commission's strategy to bolster post-pandemic recovery, economic growth, and competitiveness among Member States.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the funds are tied to significant reforms and investments aimed at enhancing digitalisation within public administration and services, improving access to finance, and fostering growth in sectors such as education, waste management, circular economy, business simplification, and forest management. These initiatives are designed to modernise vocational education and training, boost competitiveness, and streamline environmental licensing processes, thereby reducing administrative burdens and promoting more efficient investment.
The disbursement follows Portugal's ninth payment request, submitted on 18 May 2026, which received approval from the European Commission on 2 July after a favorable review by the Economic and Financial Committee of the Council. With this latest payment, Portugal has received a total of £17.23 billion, including £2.33 billion in pre-financing, representing 78.67% of its total £21.905 billion allocation. As of now, Portugal has achieved 74.54% of the milestones and targets outlined in its national recovery and resilience plan.
Payments to Portugal under the RRF are contingent upon the successful implementation of the commitments detailed in its recovery plan. As the closure of the Facility approaches in 2026, Member States are required to meet all outstanding targets by August 2026 and submit their final payment requests by September 2026.
