Nicosia: European leaders met with their counterparts from Jordan, Syria, Egypt, and Lebanon to discuss enhancing cooperation and ensuring stability across Europe and the Middle East. This dialogue took place at the Informal Leaders' Council, organized under the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, at the Filoxenia Conference Centre.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President of the Republic and EU Council President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized the importance of diplomacy and dialogue in restoring stability. He articulated the EU's commitment to actively engage with its Middle Eastern partners to achieve shared goals of stability, security, and prosperity.
European Council President Antonio Costa highlighted the severe impact of the ongoing war in the Middle East, asserting the EU's solidarity with the affected countries. Costa called for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the urgency of lifting restrictions and tolls. He also expressed concern over Lebanon's situation, identifying Hezbollah as a destabilizing force.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reiterated the EU's aim for a lasting peace that ensures free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. She urged respect for Lebanon's territorial integrity and stated that temporary ceasefires are insufficient. Von der Leyen appreciated the Gulf states' support in repatriating European citizens and underscored the importance of strengthening bonds during crises.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun shared the challenges Lebanon faces, noting the humanitarian toll of recent conflicts. Despite this, he expressed optimism about Lebanon's potential for economic integration and trade connectivity.
Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa recognized the meeting as a sign of political maturity, stressing the interconnected security interests between Europe and the Middle East. He urged the international community to address Israel's actions and fulfill its responsibilities.
