EU President Supports Ceasefire and Criticizes US Sanctions on ICC

Brussels:President Ursula von der Leyen expressed strong support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's call for a ceasefire aimed at safeguarding global food supplies and energy infrastructure amid the ongoing conflict. The war has escalated, with Russia targeting civilians beyond the front lines, prompting von der Leyen to reiterate solidarity with Ukraine and support for its leadership.

According to Cyprus News Agency, von der Leyen emphasized Ukraine's significant role in the upcoming European Council discussions, focusing on the nation's financial needs and strategies to rally international support. The European Union plans to provide additional funding for military equipment to bolster Ukraine's defenses against ongoing threats.

The EU also addressed the United States' recent announcement of sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC). The European Union has been a steadfast supporter of the ICC and voiced its regret over the US decision. The EU aims to work with all parties to the Rome Statute to uphold the ICC's independence and facilitate dialogue with the US during the six-month delay before sanctions are implemented.

Additionally, the EU and the Council of Europe marked the European and World Day against the Death Penalty with a joint statement opposing capital punishment in all forms. They highlighted progress made towards global abolition, noting several countries' significant steps in reducing or eliminating death sentences. However, the increase in executions, especially for drug-related offenses, remains a concern. The EU and Council of Europe continue to advocate for a global moratorium on executions as a step towards abolition and urge all states to adhere to international human rights standards.
