EU Foreign Ministers discussed EU – Turkey relations, the East Med and Cyprus

The Foreign Ministers of the EU exchanged views on relations with Turkey, but also on “the current situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Cyprus problem”, the Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement regarding the participation of Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos in the informal council of EU Foreign Ministers (Gymnich) held on Saturday in Brussels.

According to the statement, the Foreign Ministers exchanged views on the basis of the Joint Communication of November 29th, 2023 on the state of the EU’s political, economic and trade relations with Turkey.

In particular, the Foreign Ministers exchanged views on EU – Turkey relations by focusing on “recent regional developments, the internal situation in the country as well as the potential for cooperation in foreign policy and security areas”.

“Within this framework, the Ministers also exchanged views on the current situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and on the Cyprus problem,” the press release added.

During the informal Council, ministers also exchanged views on EU – Africa relations and the EU’s support to Ukraine, following up on the discussions of the European Council.
