EU Asylum Applications Decline in 2025, Cyprus Ranks Third in Applications Per Capita

Brussels: There has been a significant decrease in asylum applications in the European Union, according to the latest Eurostat data, with Cyprus on the other hand, recording the third-highest rate of applications per capita after Greece and Spain.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus ranks third in the rate of asylum applications per 100,000 inhabitants with a rate of 24.3, behind Greece (39.4) and Spain (25.8). The country is still receiving a high number of applications per capita, which indicates that the pressure remains significant.

The decrease in asylum applications in the EU is 27% compared to June 2024 (from 71,455 to 52,265) and 5% on a monthly basis compared to May 2025 (54,780), at the level of the 27 member states. Regarding the applications, a total of 52,265 people submitted an asylum application for the first time in June 2025, while repeat applications increased by 24% (8,140).

Most applications at the EU level come from Venezuelans (7,615), followed by Afghans (4,085), Bangladeshis (2,735), and Syrians (2,315). Regarding host countries, Spain is first (12,645), followed by Italy (9,765), France (9,510), and Germany (6,860), which received 74% of the new applications. Regarding unaccompanied minors, 1,835 minors applied for asylum, with most applications coming from Eritrea (460), Afghanistan (205), and Mali (190).

As regards protection decisions, in the second quarter of 2025, the EU issued 194,730 first-instance decisions, with 34% being positive (65,735). The countries that granted the most positive decisions were Spain (16,060), France (14,220), and Germany (13,450). The main beneficiaries of protection were Afghans (13,170), Venezuelans (12,340), and Somalis (3,215).
