Limassol: The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence (ECoE) announced on Friday the completion of the '3D-TWINMAP: Mobile 3D Mapping for Digital Twin Development' project, aimed at strengthening research excellence, improving digital public services, and accelerating the adoption of Digital Twin technologies in Cyprus.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the project's infrastructure and results were presented on Monday, 30 March 2026, during a final workshop held at the Limassol Municipality Blue Innovation Centre. The event brought together more than 50 participants from academia, the public sector, industry, and the wider public, enabling the broad dissemination of the project's outcomes.
With a total budget of £483,092.40, the '3D-TWINMAP' project was funded through the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Facility (NextGenerationEU), via the Research and Innovation Foundation, and coordinated by Marios Tzouvaras, Research Coordinator of ECoE.
Launched in October 2025 and completed on March 31, 2026, the project focused on developing an advanced mobile 3D mapping infrastructure through the acquisition and operational deployment of a high-precision, AI-powered system capable of rapidly capturing dense 3D geospatial data across large-scale urban environments.
As announced, implementation activities included the procurement and installation of equipment, training of technical staff, and technical validation through an Operational Readiness Review. In parallel, an Open Access Policy was designed and implemented, allowing external stakeholders to make use of the infrastructure.
Expected outcomes of the project include the operation of a fully developed 3D mapping unit, enhanced technical capacity at the Centre, and the development of use-case scenarios demonstrating the system's capabilities in areas such as urban planning, transportation, and environmental monitoring.
Further, according to the Centre, the project's impact lies in strengthening research excellence, improving digital public services, and accelerating the uptake of Digital Twin technologies, in line with national and European priorities for digital and green transition.
