Ministry Receives Over 10,000 New Voter Applications for May Elections

Nicosia: Cyprus Interior Ministry has received 10,031 applications from new voters eligible for registration on the electoral roll, though the exact number will be finalized after April 16, according to Menelaos Vassiliou, Head of the Elections Service.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the electoral roll as of January 2 included 561,000 citizens, but a final check will be conducted to remove deceased individuals and add new voters. The list is scheduled to be posted next Monday for final checks and objections. Once verified, it will be included in the permanent electoral list, forming the final list for the May elections.

Vassiliou also noted that between January 2 and April 2, around 6,000 registered voters applied to exercise their right to vote in cities abroad. Polling stations are expected to be set up in Athens, Thessaloniki, London, and Brussels, but not in Patras and Manchester. Some voters applied to vote abroad while simultaneously applying for registration on the electoral roll, a situation that requires further verification.

The electoral roll will be open for objections for ten days, after which the Parliament will decide on April 23 to be dissolved ahead of the elections. Subsequently, the Minister of Interior will issue a decree to officially announce the elections. Candidacies are to be submitted on May 6, with the elections scheduled for May 24. Polling stations will operate from 7 am to 6 pm. Parliamentary elections in Cyprus occur every five years.
