Nicosia: Employment in Cyprus’ broad public sector increased to 77,314 persons in the second quarter of 2025, marking a 2.1% annual rise compared with the same period of 2024, according to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus on Monday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, out of the total, 72,275 persons were employed in General Government and 5,039 in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies. Within the General Government, employment stood at 55,208 in Government, 11,185 in Non-Profit Organisations, and 5,882 in Local Authorities.
Compared with the second quarter of 2024, employment in Central Government rose by 969 persons (1.5%) and in Local Authorities by 1,295 persons (28.2%), while employment in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies fell by 664 persons (-11.6%). The Statistical Service attributed this shift to the establishment of the District Local Government Organisations (DLGOs) as of July 1, 2024, which absorbed the activities of Sewerage and Water Boards.
On a quarterly basis, employment in the broad public sector increased by 280 persons (0.4%) compared with the first quarter of 2025. Employment rose in Local Authorities by 301 persons (5.4%) and in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies by 77 persons (1.6%), while Central Government recorded a decline of 98 persons (-0.1%).
