Nicosia: The European Investment Bank is prepared to assist Cyprus with targeted financing and technical support following the severe wildfires in the Limassol district, stated EIB Vice President Kyriacos Kakouris at the Ministry of Finance. This announcement coincided with the signing of a £100 million loan agreement aimed at enhancing Cyprus’s road network.
According to Cyprus News Agency, before finalizing the new loan agreement, the EIB Vice President relayed the support of EIB President Nadia Calvino to those impacted by the recent wildfires in Cyprus. Kakouris emphasized the importance of preparedness, resilience, and the strengthening of public infrastructure, highlighting the necessity of investing in networks that safeguard lives, connect communities, and withstand climate-related pressures.
Kakouris further noted the EIB’s readiness to back Cyprus by providing financial and technical assistance aimed at reinforcing infrastructure, improving prevention mechanisms, and enhancing emergency management. Following the ceremony, Finance Minister Makis Keravnos expressed gratitude to the EIB for their swift commitment to addressing the issue and confirmed discussions with Kakouris on the matter.
Minister Keravnos assured that the government would work closely with the EIB to address emerging needs and leverage their long-standing partnership. He stated that specific details of the support plan would be available by Friday, with the government poised to begin implementing strategies to assist those affected by the wildfires.
