Copenhagen: Turkey, as a candidate country for EU membership, has obligations to every EU member state, including the Republic of Cyprus. These obligations encompass normalization, recognition, and contributing to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna stated on Tuesday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Raouna made these remarks in a doorstep statement upon her arrival at the informal General Affairs Council in Copenhagen. She emphasized that the Council serves as an excellent platform to communicate this crucial message to Turkey regarding its responsibilities as an EU candidate.
The Deputy Minister also mentioned that the Council’s discussions would center on enlargement, the Copenhagen criteria, and the gradual integration process for candidate countries. The agenda includes discussions on strengthening the rule of law toolbox and contemplating the future of Europe.
Raouna highlighted that enlargement is a geopolitical necessity and serves as a catalyst for expanding security and protection areas. The Council’s initial session will include Ministers from candidate and potential candidate countries, while the subsequent session will involve only EU member states.
The Council is set to conclude with a working lunch, during which discussions on the future of Europe will take place.
