Copenhagen: Defence Minister Vassilis Palmas participated on Friday in the informal EU Defence Ministers Council in Copenhagen which discussed, among other issues, the situation in Ukraine. He reiterated the steadfast solidarity of the Republic of Cyprus with Ukraine and highlighted the importance that Cyprus attaches to the strengthening of the European defence industrial base, as a basic prerequisite for achieving EU’s strategic autonomy.
According to Cyprus News Agency, a press release issued by the Ministry stated that the Ministers discussed ways to further strengthen military support to Ukraine. They also reviewed progress in the implementation of the White Paper on Defense Readiness 2030, with the aim of promoting specific capability development projects.
The Ministers exchanged views on the adaptation and future direction of the military missions and operations of the Common Security and Defense Policy, to respond effectively to new geopolitical challenges and strengthen the credibility of the Union as a security provider. In his interventions, Cyprus’ Minister reiterated the steadfast solidarity of the Republic of Cyprus with Ukraine and emphasized the importance that Cyprus places on strengthening the European defence industrial base.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Palmas held a meeting with his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias. They discussed current developments at the regional and international level, aspects of the bilateral cooperation, and issues concerning the existing trilateral and multilateral cooperation with friendly countries.
