Defence Minister Approves Decree for Women’s Voluntary Enlistment in National Guard

Nicosia: Minister of Defence, Vassilis Palmas, announced the approval of a decree for the voluntary enlistment of women, a decision he described as marking a new era for the National Guard.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the announcement was made following a Cabinet Meeting where Palmas stated that the decree applies to the classes of 2017-2025, with enlistment scheduled for October 30 and 31. An official announcement detailing the procedure is expected soon.

Palmas emphasized that defence and security are collective responsibilities where every citizen has the right and obligation to contribute equally. He noted that the decision acknowledges the role and rights of women in the defence of the Republic of Cyprus and underscores that the strength of the National Guard lies in the professionalism and skills of all who serve.

The Minister assured that organizational matters have been addressed, with the remaining step being the expression of interest through the recruitment office. He clarified that women’s enlistment is voluntary without any special incentives to attract volunteers.

The Minister highlighted that the legislative provision for women’s enlistment creates better conditions for gender equality. He stated that the duration of service for women will range from 6 to 14 months, with a minimum of 6 months required for the service to be deemed complete. Details on expressing interest will be announced once organizational procedures are finalized.

Regarding training, Palmas confirmed that women will undergo the same training as men.
