Cyprus-US Relations Reach New Heights Amid Economic Developments

Nicosia:The relations between Cyprus and the United States are currently at their highest level, with cooperation expanding between the two nations, according to the Presidency of the Republic. This development highlights the growing diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.

According to the Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus is experiencing significant economic activity, with the Ministry of Finance proposing an extension of the fuel subsidy until November. This subsidy involves a reduced excise tax on fuels, which was initially set to end in mid-September. The proposal was discussed in a Standing Committee on Energy session, reflecting the government's efforts to manage fuel costs amid varying economic pressures.

In terms of economic indicators, Cyprus saw an inflation rate increase to 5.2% in August, marking the second-highest in the eurozone. This rise from 4.4% in July underscores ongoing inflationary challenges. Concurrently, Cyprus recorded a notable decline in tourist overnight stays, with a 7.7% decrease in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year, as reported by Eurostat. Despite this, the island remains a significant destination for foreign visitors, with non-residents accounting for a substantial share of overnight stays.

Cyprus's economy showed resilience, growing by 3.3% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, driven by sectors such as trade, transport, and ICT. Retail trade also experienced strong growth, with an 8.9% increase in July, highlighting a robust consumer market.

Unemployment in Cyprus remained below the EU average, with a slight increase to 3.9% in July. This was slightly up from 3.8% in June but showed improvement from the previous year's figures. Additionally, Cyprus maintained a stable credit environment, with unchanged loan standards and increased household demand for loans, reflecting steady consumer confidence.

Internationally, Cyprus continues to engage in diplomacy and regional cooperation, as seen in meetings between Cypriot and international leaders. Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos emphasized the need for the EU to be more active in the Middle East, advocating for strategic discussions during an informal Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Ireland.

Overall, Cyprus is navigating a complex economic landscape with strategic international partnerships and domestic policy measures aimed at sustaining growth and stability.
