The Council of Ministers approved on Wednesday the establishment of a committee to address the problem of marine pollution on the coasts of Cyprus. The committee will take decisions on measures to respond and prevent marine pollution, to better coordinate and take appropriate solutions. According to a press release by the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, following the initiative of the Shipping Deputy Minister, Marina Hadjimanolis, two meetings were held with competent authorities, aiming to intensify efforts for the prevention and response to marine pollution, during which it was agreed that the active participation of all competent authorities is necessary to minimize the threats of pollution in the coastal areas and the cultivation of environmental awareness. The committee will comprise of a representative from each of the competent authorities. The Permanent Secretary of the Shipping Deputy Ministry has been appointed as the Coordinator of the Committee. During the Committee meetings, the Committee will ove rsee/coordinate actions as determined. "Any actions for pollution prevention and environmental awareness will be carried out by the Shipping Deputy Ministry in cooperation with the Office of the Commissioner of the Environment. The response and prevention of marine pollution is very high on the priorities of the government of Nikos Christodoulides and the Shipping Deputy Ministry" the press release notes.
