Nicosia: Cyprus is set to host representatives from all EU member states on June 8-9 for discussions on state aid issues, marking the first time such a meeting will be held in the country. Actions and priorities of the Office of Cyprus Commissioner for State Aid Control were the focus of a meeting held on May 21st. The meeting included Commissioner Stella Michaelidou, member of the European Court of Auditors Lefteris Christoforou, and Director of the Commissioner's Office Theodoros Tsiolas.
According to Cyprus News Agency, a press release from the Office of the Commissioner for State Aid Control stated that Commissioner Michaelidou spoke about efforts to enhance the institutional role of the Office. She emphasized the dual role of the Office not only as a compliance tool but also as an engine for growth, ensuring compatible state aid and promoting strategic aid to modernize and strengthen the economy.
The Commissioner highlighted the Office's participation in the Competition Working Group on State Aid issues during Cyprus's Presidency of the Council of the European Union. She noted that the upcoming State Aid Working Group meeting in Cyprus represents a significant milestone, as it will bring together representatives from all member states to discuss and take decisions on state aid matters for the first time in the country.
Christoforou discussed the responsibilities of the Court of Auditors and their relevance to the State Aid sector. Both he and Tsiolas commended the Commissioner and the staff of the Office for their ongoing efforts and expressed optimism that the objectives set for 2026-2027 would be realized.
