Retail trade turnover value records annual increase of 12.4% in November

The Turnover Value Index of Retail Trade for November 2022 increased by 12.4% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, according to the Statistical Service of Cyprus. In a press release on the Turnover Index of Retail Trade Except of Motor Vehicles the CyStat says that for the same month, the Turnover Volume Index of Retail Trade increased by 2.4% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. For the period January-November 2022, the value index is estimated to have recorded an increase of 11.3% and the volume index an increase of 2.0% compared to the same period of 2021, it adds.

Foreign Minister to represent Cyprus President at Pope Benedict’s funeral

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides departs on January 4th for Rome where he will represent the President of the Republic of Cyprus at the funeral of Pope Benedict XVI. According to a press release from the Ministry, the funeral will be held in the Basilica of Saint Peter in the Holy See, on Thursday morning. The Foreign Affairs Minister will return to Cyprus on the same evening.

Coordinated approach agreed by EU Health Security Committee on rising coronavirus cases in China

The EU’s Health Security Committee (HSC) agreed on Tuesday to promote a coordinated approach to the rise in coronavirus cases in China. In its conclusions, it says that all member states agreed on a coordinated approach to the changing COVID-19 situation in China and the implications of increased travel from China to Europe at the meeting of the Health Security Committee and that the overwhelming majority of countries are in favour of pre-departure testing.

“Sustainable peace in Cyprus can only rest on the basis of a solid reconciliation. As long as the two communities remain apart and rely on divisive narratives to formulate their understanding of the other, it will be extremely difficult to achieve such reconciliation,” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres says in an unofficial copy of his report on the peacekeeping force in Cyprus, diplomatic sources have said. Guterres finds that a surge in hard-line rhetoric on both sides has led to increased rigidity while the prospects for a mutually-agreeable settlement continue to fade.

Permanent Representative of Cyprus to UN denounces Turkish violations in a letter to Guterres

The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN, Ambassador Andreas Hadjichrysanthou, sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, denouncing Turkish violations of the national air and maritime space of the Republic of Cyprus, which occurred during the months of January-August 2022. The letter, dated December 13, was released on Tuesday as an official document of the Security Council and the UN General Assembly and according to it, a total of 560 air and 33 naval violations were observed during this eight-month period.

A total of 16,132 people were registered unemployed at the end of December 2022, according to the data kept at the District Labour Offices, the Cyprus Statistical Service (CyStat) has said. Taking into account seasonal variations according to the corrected data, which show the trend of unemployment, the number of the registered unemployed in December 2022 increased to 14,131 persons compared to 14,081 in the previous month.

Inflation for the year at 8.4%, it fell to 7.9% in December

Inflation for the period January-December 2022 recorded an increase of 8.4%, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, according to data published by the Statistical Service of Cyprus on Thursday. For December, inflation fell to 7.9%. For the period January-December 2022, the largest changes in the Consumer Price Index, compared to the same period of 2021, were recorded in Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels, by 21% and in Transport, by 16.3%.

The Industrial Turnover Index reached 180 units (base 2015=100), recording an increase of 16.9% in October 2022 compared to October 2021, according to data published by the Statistical Service of Cyprus, on Thursday. In manufacturing, the Industrial Turnover Index for October 2022 reached 171.5 units, recording an increase of 10.4% compared to October 2021.

EU households spend 25% of their expenditure on Housing, water and energy, according to Eurostat

In 2021, ‘Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels’ represented a quarter (25.0%) of EU household expenditure and 17.1% of household expenditure in Cyprus, according to Eurostat, the statistic service of the EU. Compared to 2020, this category showed a decline of 0.5 percentage points (pp) in the EU and of 1.1 pp in Cyprus (down from 18.2%).

Non-performing loans decreased by €32 million to €2.69 billion in October 2022

Non-performing loans (NPLs) at the end of October 2022 amounted to €2.69 billion, showing a decrease of €32 million compared to the previous month. According to updated data released on Monday by the Central Bank of Cyprus, with a reference date of October 31st, 2022, NPLs to total lending stood at 10.5% at the end of October, compared to 10.6% the previous month. Housing Price Index recorded an increase of 5.3% during Q3 of 2022

House Price Index (HPI) recorded an increase of 5.3% the third quarter of 2022, compared to the same quarter of 2021, according to preliminary estimate published by the Statistical Service on Tuesday. HPI for the thrird quarter of 2022 amounts to 112.51 units. Compared to the second quarter of 2022, the HPI increased by 5.8%. House Price Index is a quarterly index which measures the change in the average prices of residential dwellings.

Total motor vehicles registrations decreased by 2.7% in 2022

The total registrations of motor vehicles decreased by 2.7% to 33,795 in January-December 2022, from 34,716 in January-December 2021, according to data published by the Statistical Service on Tuesday. Passenger saloon cars decreased to 26,598 from 26,634 in January-December 2021, recording a fall of 0.1%.

Construction works for LNG import jetty to begin next week

Works for the construction of a jetty for the import of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) for electricity generation in Cyprus will begin on next week, the Cypriot authorities said on Tuesday. Increase in government employment by 1.2% in December 2022

Government employment increased in Cyprus by 632 persons (1.2%) in December 2022, in comparison to the corresponding month of 2021 and reached 53,686 persons. According to Cyprus’ Statistical Service, permanent staff decreased by 760 persons (-2.9%), from 26,226 to 25,466 persons.

Tourist arrivals in Cyprus at 3.2 million in 2022 despite loss of Russian and Ukrainian market

For the period of January – December 2022, arrivals of tourists totaled 3,201,080, compared to 1,936,931 in the corresponding period of 2021, 631,609 in 2020 and 3,976,777 arrivals in the same period of 2019, announced the Statistical Service of Cyprus. In December 2022 alone, the tourist arrivals reached 110,041, compared to 96,928 in December 2021, recording an increase of 13.5%.

The Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) rose by 8.1% in 2022, compared to 2021. Energy consumption from renewables in Cyprus below EU average but significant progress made, Eurostat data show

In Cyprus, the share of gross final energy consumption from renewable sources was at 18.4% in 2021, below the European average of 21.8%, having however increased steadily since 2004 and the country’s accession into the EU, data released by Eurostat on Friday show. Compared to 2020, the share increased by 1.5 percentage points (from 16.9%). In 2019, the share had been at 13.8%. In absolute terms, the production of electricity from renewable energy sources in the European Union increased by almost 5% from 2020 to 2021 according to data released by Eurostat, the statistical service of the EU. In the fourth quarter of 2022, seasonally adjusted GDP increased by 0.1% in the euro area and remained stable in the EU, compared with the previous quarter, according to a preliminary flash estimate published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, on Tuesday. In the third quarter of 2022, GDP had grown by 0.3% in both the euro area and in the EU.

Cyprus remained the country with the highest level of NPLs in 2021, according to Eurostat

In 2021, Cyprus remained the country with the highest stock of non-performing loans (assets) of the general government, at 20.2% of GDP, according to data released by Eurostat, the statistical service of the EU. According to a press release, this was due to a large transaction in 2018, whereby non-performing loans from a Cypriot public financial corporation (classified outside government) were transferred to a government unit.

Economic rationalism should not be ignored for the sake of other considerations thereby maintaining a serious fiscal administration and continuity, Finance Minister Constantinos Petrides said on Tuesday. “The public service in Cyprus with the Finance Ministry at is frontline, constitute the backbone providing the conditions of a serious administration and a serious continuity, provided economic rationalism will not be ignored for the sake of other considerations,” Petrides told a press conference to take stock of the Ministry’s work during his term in office.
