Cyprus records two deaths due to COVID-19, 1,414 new cases, 183 people at hospital

Cypriot health authorities reported on Wednesday two new deaths due to COVID-19 and 1,414 new cases, bringing the total tally of deaths and infections since the outbreak of the pandemic to 984 and 462,783 respectively.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health, the number of hospitalisations reached 183, while the number of patients treated in serious condition in Intensive Treatment Units and Advance Care Units is 29.

A total of 54,299 tests were carried out on Wednesday. The overall daily positivity rate stands at 2.6%.

According to the Ministry, the new fatalities concern two women aged 82 and 83 who passed away on Wednesday.

Patients receiving treatment in public hospitals declined to 183, of whom 29 are being treated in serious condition. Of the patients in serious condition, 7 are intubated, 4 are treated in ICU but not connected to a ventilator and 18 patients are in Advanced Care Units, the Ministry added.

Data show that 48.09% of the patients treated in public hospitals have no vaccination history, while 11 patients who are no longer infectious are intubated in serious condition in Intensive Treatment Units due to COVID.

According to the Ministry, PCR tests amounted to 2,659 detecting 172 positive cases with a positivity rate of 6.47%, while rapid antigen tests amounted to 51,640 after which 1,242 new infections were diagnosed, resulting to a positivity rate of 2.41%.

In the context of contact tracing, 104 PCR tests were carried out, detecting 7 new cases with a positivity rate of 6.73%.

On private initiative, 1,067 PCR tests were carried out and 132 new cases are found (12.37%), whereas 22,535 rapid antigen tests were conducted, after which 735 new cases were diagnosed (3.26%).

In the context of the Ministry of Health’s testing programmes using rapid antigen tests, a total of 29,105 samples were taken detecting 507 new infections.

Following 13,717 tests carried out in the various testing sites, 445 new cases were diagnosed with a 3.24% positivity rate.

As part of testing in the education system, 9,356 tests were taken in high schools after which 26 new cases were diagnosed with a positivity rate of 0.28%. Furthermore 2,254 rapid tests were carried out as part of the test-to-stay process, detecting 20 new cases (0.89%).

In the context of testing in elderly homes 1,091 rapid tests were carried out, detecting 11 new cases (1.01%), while 3 infections were traced following 2,204 tests carried out in closed structures (0.14%).
