The number of deaths among residents and visitors in Cyprus rose by 1.06% in 2022, reaching a total of 7,404 compared to 7,336 in 2021, according to data released Thursday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus. The "Health and Hospital Statistics" report indicates that 52.3% of the deaths involved men, while 47.7% involved women, figures that remained relatively unchanged from 2021. The leading cause of death was diseases of the circulatory system, accounting for 28.5% of the total, followed by neoplasms at 24.0%, respiratory system diseases at 9.5%, endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases at 7.6%, and injuries and poisoning from external causes at 4.7%. Increase in In-Patient discharges ------------------------------------- In 2022, 94,654 in-patient discharges were issued, representing a 5.9% increase from the 89,357 discharges in 2021. The Statistical Service attributes part of this increase to the gradual inclusion of new hospitals in the General Healthcare System (GHS). Of the discharges in 2 022, 45.9% were from hospitals of the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO), while 54.1% were from private hospitals contracted with the GHS. In 2021, these figures were 46.0% and 54.0%, respectively. The majority of in-patient discharges were from the speciality of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (15.0%), followed by General Surgery (14.7%), Pathology (12.0%), Cardiology (10.9%), and Orthopaedics (9.8%). Based on the diagnosis at discharge, circulatory system diseases accounted for 12.4%, digestive system diseases for 12.3%, neoplasms for 11.4%, respiratory system diseases for 10.6%, pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperium for 10.5%, injuries and poisoning for 9.3%, and genitourinary system diseases for 9.1%. Surge in Day-Care patient discharges --------------------------------------------- The number of day-care patient discharges also saw a significant rise, with 278,059 discharges in 2022, a 20.3% increase from the 231,109 discharges in 2021. This growth is partly due to the inclusion of new private day -care hospitals in the GHS in 2022. Of these discharges, 56.2% were from SHSO hospitals, while 43.8% were from private hospitals. In 2021, the respective percentages were 62.7% and 37.3%. Out-Patient attendances reach 7.6 million ---------------------------------------------------- In 2022, there were 7,669,535 out-patient attendances, up 6.5% from 7,202,579 in 2021. Of the total attendances in 2022, 11.5% (879,584) were at SHSO hospitals and health centres, while 88.5% (6,789,951) were at private sector physicians contracted with the GHS. The respective figures for 2021 were 13.2% and 86.8%. For out-patient visits to personal doctors, 11.8% were at SHSO hospitals and health centres, and 88.2% were at private physicians. In 2021, these percentages were 14.3% and 85.7%.
