Cyprus President Announces £230 Million Development Projects for Paphos

Paphos: President Nikos Christodoulides has unveiled an ambitious plan comprising over 75 development projects for the Paphos district, with a total budget exceeding £230 million. The announcement underscores the government’s dedication to achieving balanced regional growth and long-term strategic planning.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides made the announcement during a meeting with local authorities and stakeholders in Paphos. He highlighted the district’s increasing strategic significance in defense and security, facilitated by the upgrade of the Andreas Papandreou Air Base in collaboration with the United States and the modernization of critical infrastructure.

Among the key projects is the long-awaited Paphos Marina, which will accommodate up to 1,000 leisure boats across 165,000 square meters. This project aims to transform Paphos into a premier maritime and tourism destination, bolstering the local economy and creating new employment opportunities.

In cultural and heritage sectors, the government plans to advance several initiatives, including the development of a Cultural Park and amphitheater in Acheleia, a digital upgrade of the Archaeological Museum, and preservation work on essential monuments such as the Ancient Odeon and the pedestrian bridges of Chrysopolitissa. Education enhancements include constructing and modernizing schools in Chlorakas, Timi, and Ayios Kendeas, alongside the expansion of the Emba Lyceum and Technical School.

The health sector will see investments totaling £8 million aimed at upgrading Paphos General Hospital, with improvements to emergency services, pediatrics, and gynecology, as well as the creation of a new pulmonology clinic. Social welfare initiatives feature a model care center for the elderly and a new nursing home in Chlorakas.

The president also outlined significant transport projects, including the Paphos-Polis highway, new bypasses, and enhanced airport connections, designed to improve road safety, reduce congestion, and enhance growth potential.

Later, addressing attendees at the Attikon Cultural Venue in Paphos, President Christodoulides emphasized Cyprus’s trajectory of steady and robust growth, despite facing regional and European geopolitical challenges. He pointed out that Cyprus maintains one of the highest growth rates in the European Union, even as larger European economies struggle.

President Christodoulides further noted that consistent fiscal discipline and prudent economic management are yielding positive results, with public debt projected to drop below 60% of GDP by the end of 2025. This milestone is seen as a reinforcement of the country’s credibility and a signal of stability.

He concluded by asserting that a robust, resilient economy is crucial for implementing policies and projects that enhance citizens’ quality of life while enabling targeted social policies.
