Cyprus participates in the 22nd Birmingham Commonwealth Games with 53 athletes, aiming for the best possible presence

Cyprus will participate in the 22nd Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Birmingham, England from July 28 to August 8, 2022. The mission consists of 53 athletes, 34 men and 19 women, from 12 sports Federations.

The Cypriot mission attended nonm Tuesday a press conference at the Cyprus Olympic Committee headquarters, in Nicosia, where it was emphasized that the goal is to achieve the best possible results.

Cyprus participates with 43 athletes, based on the results of the previous events and the ranking that Cyprus had, while the other 10 athletes of the mission, competing in Weightlifting, Beach Volleyball, and Table Tennis secured participation through qualifying matches. More than 5,000 athletes from 71 countries and territories that make up the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) will take part in the games for the first time in history.

For the first time in the history of the Commonwealth, there will be para-sports events and our country will participate with an athlete, Pantelis Kailis in Para-Table Tennis.

The opening ceremony of the matches will take place on Thursday 28th July at the Alexander Stadium (21.00-00.30 Cyprus time). The stadium has a capacity of 18,000 seats, but with the addition of folding bleachers, its capacity during the games will increase to 30,000. The closing ceremony will also take place at the Alexander Stadium on Monday, August 8th (22.00 – 00.00 Cyprus time).
