Cyprus MP says respect for international law the only possible solution for Ukrainian crisis

Cyprus MP Irene Charalambides is attending the 22nd Winter Meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) which began Thursday.

A minute’s silence was observed in memory of the victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

Charalambides who is the Vice-President of the Assembly participated in a discussion on the understanding of the role, operation and contribution of the OSCE one year after the war in Ukraine.

She noted that respect for international law remains the cornerstone of the international order, and that national sovereignty, territorial integrity and the abstinence from the use of force are basic values on which international lawfulness is based.

Referring to Russia’s recent suspension of its participation in the New Start Treaty, Charalambides expressed concern about the possibility of a generalized military conflict or the use of nuclear weapons and called for a de-escalation of the military confrontation.
