Chair of Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Trade, Industry and Tourism Kyriakos Hadjiyianni met Friday with a Portuguese delegation, comprising the Member of the Committee on Environment and Energy of the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal Nelson Brito and the Mayor of the Portuguese city of Aljustrel, Carlos Teles.
The visit is in the framework of the activities of the European Network URBACT “Volunteer Cities+”, in which Aljustrel and the town of Athienou, in Cyprus, participate. Athienou mayor attended the meeting.
They all expressed the common will for parliamentary cooperation in issues related to the use of renewable energy sources, EU’s energy autonomy and inflation, especially in the energy sector.
Hadjiyiannis briefed his guests on the Cyprus issue and Turkey’s provocations and thanked Portugal for its stance based on principles.
Brito expressed his country’s solidarity with Cyprus and reaffirmed that Portugal supports efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem, on the basis of international law.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
