Cyprus Forum Highlights Long-Term Benefits of EU Presidency and European Defence

Nicosia:Former Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna emphasized the importance of preserving the expertise and skills gained from Cyprus's preparation and execution of the EU Council Presidency, which took place in the first half of 2026. Speaking at the Cyprus Forum, Raouna noted that these experiences should be leveraged for the state's long-term benefit. She highlighted the merit-based selection and strategic governance as key legacies from the Presidency.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Raouna further stressed the importance of clear priorities and timelines, using the example of the Cyprus Presidency Secretariat, which expanded from one to 70 members through a merit-based selection process. She underscored the need for strategic planning and continuous monitoring in governance, emphasizing that preparedness is crucial for effective crisis management.

In a keynote speech, Cypriot MEP Costas Mavrides called for the establishment of a sovereign European defence. He argued that Europe must take responsibility for its own security, reducing dependency on third countries for critical defence technologies. Mavrides also highlighted the European Parliament's role in supporting innovation in the defence sector and stressed the need for cooperation based on mutual respect and EU values, citing Turkey's policies as contrary to EU interests.

Nicolas Kyriakides, Executive President of the Cyprus Forum, addressed the importance of transparency and participation in policymaking. He acknowledged recent withdrawals from the Forum, attributing them to a lack of consultation. Kyriakides emphasized the Forum's commitment to discussing necessary issues, including the Cyprus problem, and highlighted the importance of ongoing dialogue in shaping the country's future.
