Cyprus’ Foreign Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Talks with New Turkish Cypriot Leader

Luxembourg: Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos has reaffirmed the Cypriot government’s dedication to engaging in discussions with the newly elected Turkish Cypriot leader. This commitment follows the conclusion of the Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Kombos emphasized the importance of substantive negotiations conducted within the framework of the UN Security Council and aligned with EU values, principles, and legislation. He noted that any progress would require a shift in Turkey’s policy, highlighting that the European Union offers Turkey a variety of options, and it is now up to Turkey to make the right choice.

The Foreign Affairs Council also covered updates on Ukraine. Kombos reported that Ukrainian colleagues briefed members on recent developments, meetings, and communications. He reiterated Cyprus’ unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and expressed anticipation for diplomatic discussions aimed at achieving a ceasefire and lasting peace.

Regarding the Middle East situation, Kombos mentioned the council’s discussion of the Trump plan, consisting of 20 points. He commended the leadership of President Trump and the contributions of Qatar and Egypt as mediators. Kombos emphasized the fragility of the arrangement and the need for full implementation, calling for EU and member state engagement.

On Cyprus’ humanitarian plan for Gaza, Kombos outlined Cyprus’ dynamic contribution plan, which aligns with six points of the Trump plan. This plan focuses on humanitarian aid, reconstruction, and security in Gaza.

Kombos concluded by reiterating Cyprus’ commitment to supporting the EU and ensuring active involvement to consolidate and implement the agreement effectively.
