Nicosia: Cyprus supports Albania’s EU accession perspective, Foreign Minister, Constantinos Kombos, has stated, highlighting the enlargement of the EU towards the Western Balkans as a geopolitical necessity during these challenging times.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Kombos emphasized the importance of security, stability, and prosperity in a recent interview with Albanian Daily News. He remarked on the positive trajectory of Cyprus-Albania bilateral relations and noted the untapped potential in various areas that could enhance economic cooperation and foster investments. Kombos highlighted the opportunity for new agreements, such as the Avoidance of Double Taxation, and pointed out the Western Balkans region as an attractive space for Cyprus’ business community to develop synergies.
When asked about Cyprus’ priorities upon assuming the Presidency of the Council of the EU on January 1st, Kombos mentioned shifting the EU’s focus towards the wider Middle East. He described the region as not only a place of consecutive crises but also one of opportunity and possibility.
On the matter of Cyprus’ future expectations regarding its unresolved problem, Kombos expressed the government’s commitment to the liberation and reunification of Cyprus, based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation, in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions. He stressed the importance of resuming negotiations under the agreed UN framework to end the occupation and unlawful division of Cyprus, emphasizing the need for willingness from the other side.
Discussing the Middle East, Kombos noted Cyprus’ active engagement in dialogue with regional actors, advocating for de-escalation and sustained diplomatic efforts as the only viable way forward. He positioned Cyprus as a strategic pillar in the region and a gateway between areas.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution has remained elusive, with the latest negotiations in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ending inconclusively.
