Cyprus and Italy Sign Memorandum to Tackle Illicit Antiquities Trafficking

Rome: An important Memorandum of Understanding was signed in Rome between Cyprus and Italy, marking a decisive step in the joint effort to combat clandestine excavations and the illicit trafficking of antiquities, while further strengthening cultural cooperation between the two countries, a press release issued by Cyprus’s Deputy Ministry of Culture said.

According to Cyprus News Agency, during a bilateral meeting held at the Ministry of Culture of Italy, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr Vasiliki Kassianidou, and Italian Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli reaffirmed their strong commitment to protecting cultural heritage through enhanced collaboration, technical training, and the exchange of expertise. They signed the MoU which addresses one of the most pressing challenges in the field of cultural heritage, adding that Italy’s internationally recognized expertise in prevention, law enforcement, and heritage recovery is expected to offer valuable guidance as Cyprus intensifies its own efforts.

The two officials also discussed the role of culture during times of crisis, including measures to safeguard cultural heritage in situations of conflict and natural disasters. Moreover, they exchanged views on how to enhance the protection of archaeological sites through joint actions and best practices.

According to the press release, Kassianidou also presented Cyprus’s cultural agenda and priorities in view of the Cypriot EU Presidency in 2026, emphasizing the central role of culture in fostering international cooperation, resilience, and sustainable development.
