Cyprus and Israel prepare MoUs on firefighting and biological control of rodents

The preparation of Memoranda of Understanding between Cyprus and Israel on issues related with Firefighting and on issues of biological control of rodents and other organisms harmful to agriculture, has been decided during the contacts of Cyprus Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Costas Kadis in Israel.

According to a Agriculture Ministry press release issued by the press and information office (PIO), the Minister of Agriculture paid a visit to Israel on July 3 and 4, 2022, at the invitation of the Israeli Ministers of Environment and Regional Cooperation.

During his visit, Kadis had the opportunity to be briefed on the successful programme implemented by Israel for the biological control of rodents with the use of a barn owl.

In addition, during his meetings with the Minister of Regional Cooperation and other Israeli officials, it was decided to prepare and sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries on biological control of rodents and other organisms harmful to agriculture.

In the same meetings, the possibility of expanding the cooperation between the two countries on issues of dealing with forest fires was discussed. Towards this end, a memorandum of understanding between the two countries will also be prepared.

The Memorandum will include, among other things, the exchange of aircrafts for forest firefighting in case of emergency as well as the further training of the personnel of the two countries in forest firefighting.
