Cyprus Advocates for Structured EU-US Dialogue, Says Foreign Minister

Warsaw: Cyprus advocates for a structured, intensive, and continuous dialogue between the European Union (EU) and the United States (US), stated Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos at the Informal Meeting of EU Foreign Ministers (Gymnich) in Warsaw. He emphasized that Cyprus fully supports EU enlargement based on merit and established conditionalities.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Kombos highlighted the agenda of the meeting, which began with discussions with David Lammy, the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom, describing the UK as “a natural ally of the European Union.” He noted the UK’s unique position due to its long-standing association with the European family and expressed a desire to work towards a special relationship with the UK.

Kombos mentioned that discussions would also address the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine and EU-US relations, noting the interrelated nature of these issues. He reiterated Cyprus’s support for a structured dialogue between the EU and the US.

Following the Gymnich meeting, the Polish Presidency will host an informal lunch with nine candidate countries. The focus will be on hybrid threats, with Cyprus emphasizing the need to enhance the EU’s capacity for tailored solutions and rapid response.

Kombos stated the importance of identifying those responsible for such threats and encouraged looking beyond typical suspects. On the topic of enlargement, he reaffirmed Cyprus’s support for expansion based on compliance with established rules, urging aspiring member states to concentrate on adherence rather than exceptions.
